What is 5G?
5G is the latest wave of internet speed. But, unlike the leap from 3G to 4G, the increase in speed from 4G to 5G will be immensely different.
With 5G you will get higher data rates, reduced latency, it will save more energy, have a reduced cost, have a night system capacity and a wider device connectivity.
5G is said to be a lot faster than 4G. I’ve read various sources that state between 20 times and 100 times. So yeah, there’s a bit of difference there but even in the lower estimate, it’s still a huge increase.
Companies like EE and OnePlus have been preparing for the global release of this new high speed service for years.
The infrastructure needed to support this tech is being embedded and built into countries a number of countries across the globe and China has been preparing for the roll out for a while. This is to ensure that the benefits of this new technology will positively impact all people’s lives (no matter if they are in the poorer parts of the world) and as soon as possible. It’s not sure which country will be the first to adopt 5G though.
When Will It Be Here?
The global roll out is said to begin in 2019 but there will be limited availability to start with. You will also need a new device as the current devices don’t support this new network. So you’ll have to wait and see which companies produce and get their device to market first. Whoever does, will likely have a larger market share because user’s will want to be on a less crowded and faster network. However, this may just apply to the early adopters.
How Will It Affect Apps?
The apps that you create will be affected in the following ways:
- Connections to IoT devices will be a lot easier
- A lot more cloud first apps will be created as the data will be easier to retrieve
- The size of apps will be smaller as most of the content and data will be stored in the cloud or apps will simply be streamed to devices. However, with the range of 5G being a lot shorter, some backup or local storage may be required for areas that don’t have network coverage.
What Should I Do To Be Ready?
In order to build for 5G devices you’ll need to obtain a new 5G device to develop and test ok. But, I don’t expect it to be long before the device farms (cloud-based or those dependent on physical devices) to offer this service to ensure developers can get involved with this tech upgrade as soon as possible.
Are you excited about 5G?
5G will change the way we use the internet and all of our connected devices.
Make sure you start thinking about the potential updates to your apps to ensure you’re ahead of the curve.
